VEC Poised To Build Vermont’s First Utility Scale Solar Project

Plans are afoot to construct the first large scale solar research project in Vermont. Vermont Electrical Company is spearheading the initiative in partnership with National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).  NRECA represents over nine hundred electrical cooperatives and VEC supplies electricity to 74 towns in northern section of Vermont and Chittenden County.

The project will utilize up to 30 acres of land in the northern area of VEC’s service area and is estimated to cost approximately $10 million. Although NRECA has received a $3.6 million from the U.S Department to initiate solar research projects across the country, VEC’s project will not receive any subsidy.

VEC is hoping that the project will be completed by 2017; however, a permit for the project has not yet been issued by the Public Service Board. The project will propel Vermont’s goal to produce 90 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050.
