Solar Mega Project in El Centro Up and Running

Tenaska has finally completed their mega solar project located near El Centro. The project started in December 2011 and was officially completed on the 1st of November 2013. The project consists of almost 2 million solar panels and covers almost 1,000 acres of land in the Imperial Valley Desert.

These solar panels are in now in full operation and have the capacity to generate electricity to more than 40,000 homes in California. Customers served by San Diego Gas and Electric will have to enter a 25 year contract to purchase the plant’s power. However, it will be three years before the terms of agreement are made available.

The state of California has a mandate to use renewable sources of energy to produce 33 percent of its electricity. As a result, utility company’s including San Diego Gas and electric are working hard to comply with this. The project’s construction contractor was First Solar who also supplied the photovoltaic solar panels.
